Aloe Vera
Botanical Name: Aloe barbadensis
Light:
Bright, natural light; a south, west or some east facing windows work best. Rotate weekly to ensure proper light on all sides. In winter, more it to a sunny spot as the light levels are lower & the days are shorter. In summer, keep it away from hot, sunny windows to avoid leaf burn. Keep in part shade if moved outside for the summer.
Water Requirement:
Depending on environmental conditions, you will need to water every 2-4 weeks. In winter, as with all houseplants, water less. Smaller pots may require more frequent watering. Never allow Aloe to sit in a saucer full of water.
Fertilizer:
A balanced fertilizer can be used during the spring and summer months only.
Growth Habit:
Outdoors, Aloe Vera can reach 2’ in height & spread. Indoors it grows slower and will most likely max out at 18” x 18”.
Noteworthy Characteristics:
Medicinal aloe is noted for the healing and cosmetic properties attributed to its sap. This sap is added to many commercial cosmetics, lotions and creams for its ability to moisten dry skin. A brown leaf may be applied directly yo burns on the skin for relief. Aloe is easily propagated from offsets that appear near the base of mature plants.
