Botanical Name: Calathea

Light:

Calathea plants need light but you should never subject them to direct sunlight. Direct sun will make the leaves lose their markings. However, you should not put your Calathea in a completely dark spot. Good places for your calathea may include a north-facing window or another place with enough light but without much direct sunlight.

Water Requirement:

Calathea require moist soil at all times. However, it should never sit on water. It is best to give your calathea small but regular amounts of water during growing season. Water as soon as you notice the surface starting to dry up. During the cooler and darker winter months you may water a little less.

Fertilizer:

To ensure proper growth of the plant, feed with a good liquid fertilizer about every 15 days, from April to August. Winter fertilizing is not necessary.

Growth Habit:

Upright, oblong leaves in a dazzling array of colors held on long, upright stalks. Grows 10” to 18”.

Pro Tips:

  • Avoid drafts or sudden temperature changes

  • Plants need high humidity which can often be hard to provide in winter. Consider standing a potted plant on a bed of wet pebbles, misting the foliage regularly and/or growing the plant in a humidified room.

  • NEVER use any leaf shine products or leaf polish products on Calathea plants.
