Botanical Name: Dracaena

Light:

Prefers bright light, but many varieties can also survive in lower light conditions. Be aware that plants in lower light situations will grow slower and will produce smaller leaves with less intense color.

Water Requirement:

Overwatering causes root rot and is one of the main reasons a Dracaena plant dies. Water your plant thoroughly and allow the top 75% of the soil to dry before watering again. In low light, allow the soil to dry completely before watering. Water your plant less in the winter when light levels are lower and growth has slowed.

Fertilizer:

Dracaena plants have a relatively low fertilizer requirement. Feed them lightly at the beginning of spring or twice a year with a slow-release fertilizer. Do not fertilize in the winter.

Growth Habit:

They can easily become 5-6ft. tall indoors!

Dracaena plants vary in size, shape, and color but all share a main characteristic of long leaves that grow outward and upward from a central stalk or cane. The canes are sturdy lending an unexpected architectural element to the unique foliage.

Noteworthy Characteristics:

The often-overlooked reliable workhorse of the houseplant world! There are approximately 120 species of Dracaena trees and shrubs. Too many to name here but each will give you mighty return for very little maintenance. If you give this hearty indoor plant the proper light and water conditions, it will become a lovely, long term resident in your home!
