Botanical Name: Ficus Lyrata

Light:

Bright indirect life. Fiddle leaf figs love the light. Bright light means sunny southern or western facing window with bright, direct light all dal long. It should get a minimum of 5-6 hours of direct sunlight each day, preferably more.

Water Requirement:

Keep steadily moist and water only when top inch of soil is dry. Test this by sticking your finger in the soil. Reduce watering from fall to late winter. Don’t allow it to sit in water or it will drop leaves and suffer from root rot.

Fertilizer:

Fertilize once a month during growing seasons (spring + summer), but not n winter. F. Lyrata do not have high fertilizer requirements.

Growth Habit:

Can reach to 6 or more feet tall when grown as a houseplant. Similar to other ficus species, fiddle leaf fig may drop its leaves to show displeasure. Most often leaf drop is caused by air that is too cool. A lack of humidity or a change in light levels.

Noteworthy Characteristics:

It is native to Africa. It is a broadleaf evergreen tree that may grow to 60-100’ in its native habitat. In colder climates, this is a popular houseplant that typically grows to 2-10’ tall. It is noted for its large, lyre-shaped, dark green leaves which resemble the shape of a violin (fiddle).

These beauties have a reputation of being quite finicky and difficult to keep alive.

  • Fiddle leaf fig leaves tend to collect a lot of dust. To help keep the plant healthy wipe the dust off with a soft cloth!
