Philodendron - “White Measure” or “White Wave”

IMG_2845.jpg

Botanical Name: Philodendron birkin

Light:

Bright, indirect light. Indoors , even a bit of direct sun is fine. If moved outside for a summer vacation, a shady spot with dappled sunlight is best or it could burn.

Water Requirement:

Wait until at least the top 1-2” of soil feels dry, then water thoroughly. Avoid overwatering.

Fertilizer:

Feed when the plant is actively growing. (Spring + Summer)

Growth Habit:

A very well-behaved Philodendron. Under perfect conditions, these plants can grow from one and a half feet to three feet at maximum. Under typical houseplant conditions these are slower growing and will not overtake a room or become unruly!

Noteworthy Characteristics:

Once in high demand and short supply, Philodendron birkin used to command collector prices, but thanks to mass production through tissue culture, it’s now easier to find and more affordable. An interesting characteristic of Philodendron birkin is that its variegation is unstable, and over time it can produce one or more leaves that look just like its parent plant, the Philodendron rojo congo. It has also been known to produce almost completely white leaves, ones with a splash of pink, or it can revert to being completely green.

Pro Tips:

  • A nice chunky, well-draining soil is KEY. A mix that is going to have plenty of aeration and stay moist, but never soggy. We blend our own custom aroid mix that works well with these and many other plants from this family.

  • Native to the tropics, Philodendron birkin will struggle in colder temperatures. Make sure it is not near any drafty windows or doors as the colder air from outside will eventually harm your plant.
