Polka Dot Begonia

Botanical Name: Begonia Maculata ‘Wightii"‘

Light:

The begonia needs sunlight but keep it away from the harsh afternoon sun. An eastern windowsill is ideal, or a shady location outside for summer vacations!

Water Requirement:

Thoroughly water soil until water runs out of the bottom of the pot and allow it to dry before re-watering. Never let the plant sit in standing water. Do not overwater because the begonia family are particularly susceptible to root rot. Growing begonias in African violet pots is a great way to make bottom watering easy, and will also help prevent overwatering.

Fertilizer:

Apply a liquid houseplant fertilizer during the spring and summer months according to the package instructions every two weeks to encourage bigger leaves and blooms.

Growth Habit:

These are relatively fast growers and every season the polka dot begonia puts on a show, but you should expect her to flower in spring or in late winter. If you want to give yours a prune it would be best to do so in the early spring.

Noteworthy Characteristics:

Indoor begonia plant care is easy and you’ll find that they require similar care as other common houseplants. Begonia Maculata is one of the most exciting begonias! The undersides of its leaves are a scarlet red, and the upper side is green with white/silver dots. During the flowering season (spring to autumn) Begonia Maculata produces white flowers in a cluster on a single flower stem. It is native to Brazil.
