Ponytail Palm

IMG_4668.JPG

Botanical Name: Beaucarnea recurvata

Light:

Technically, a ponytail palm needs bright light but because it is such an adaptable plant, it will tolerate bright light about half the time. In fact, if you keep it in lower light conditions half the year and provide bright light conditions the other half of the year, it 3will be perfectly happy. This means that as long as you place it outdoors in the summer, it will tolerate just about any indoor light conditions in the winter… as long as you don’t overwater!

Water Requirement:

It’s best to keep it in dry conditions because this plant is semi-succulent. Allow the soil to dry out completely in between waterings, checking every 2-3 weeks. Water once a month in the winter.

Fertilizer:

Feed once in the Spring and once in the Summer. Any more than this and the plant may develop brown tips on the leaves.

Growth Habit:

This will not happen quickly, but this slow-growing tree can put on some size and grow to several feet tall indoors.

Noteworthy Characteristics:

The Ponytail Palm is neither a palm not a tree. It’s actually a member of the Agave family, nation to the southeastern desert of Mexico! Pet friendly, drought tolerant, slow-growing and requires very little care. A perfect match for beginners, dorm rooms, offices and the forgetful!

Pro Tips:

  • Can be susceptible to mealy bug and spider mites in their tufty leaves due to their preference for dry environments. Give your plant’s foliage a rinse in the sink or shower occasionally to help keep it clean and pest free.

  • Protect from cold drafts from windows, air conditioning/heat vents, or doors.
