Weeping Fig Ficus Tree
Botanical Name: Ficus benjamina
Light:
Bright room with plenty of indirect light. They thrive when summer outdoors, and while they can tolerate full sun for part of the day it is very important that you transition sunny conditions gradually or the leaves will sunburn and drop. Transition by starting in full shade, then every 3-5 days move to brighter shade, then filtered sun, then a few hours of morning sun, etc.
Water Requirement:
Keep the plant steadily moist, but do not allow to sit in water or is will drop leaves and may develop root rot. In its native environment, ficus typically start to drop leaves at the beginning of the dry season, making them especially sensitive to changes in moisture. Make sure your watering schedule is consistent!
Fertilizer:
Liquid feed during active growth in late Spring and Summer, or apply Osmocote for the season.
Growth Habit:
3-9 feet when grown indoors.
Noteworthy Characteristics:
The weeping fig has a quirky habit of dropping leaves when its environment changes, so rest assured it WILL drop leaves once you bring it home (or inside from outside, vis versa, or after repotting) and its perfectly normal.
Typically about one third to half of the leaves drop and will later regrow. If a larger percentage of leaves drop suddenly, look at the environment (water, temp., light, humidity) or for pests and adjust anything that might be a problem.
F. benjamina is particularly good at filtering formaldehyde, toluene, and xylene from the air.
The larger trees look particularly cute when adorned in small twinkle light!
